Where you are going; where you’ve been and points in between are all easily accessible with an in-dash navigation system from Progressive Audio. We offer the latest GPS navigation systems that have up-to-date maps, multiple route choices and easy to view graphics. They are more current than most factory installed systems and they’re fully updatable. More than just a map application on a smartphone, these systems are installed in the vehicle and use a dedicated GPS antenna and speed sensor connections. This increases the accuracy of routing and the vehicle’s location on the map, including small changes in elevation such as exiting a freeway.
GPS Navigation and Mapping Data
All navigation systems use data collected from GPS satellites to plot a vehicle’s or device’s location. That location is overlaid on a digital map of roads, highways and points of interest (POI) that allow you to input a street address or major landmark to determine a destination. The navigation system then plots and assists you on that route.
A significant difference of a GPS navigation system installed in your vehicle is the number of available channels to ‘see’ satellites so that you have the greatest chance of accurately showing your position and progress throughout the route. All GPS-based navigation requires at least three satellites to provide latitude and longitude location. A fourth satellite is required to add in accurate elevation readings. Most of the GPS-navigation products we offer have between 8 and 12 receiver channels, which is as many satellites as are typically ‘within view’ of the antenna at a given location. With our navigation systems, you have the best chance of gathering the GPS data necessary to provide meaningful navigation of your route in many weather conditions. This is something a smartphone, as great as they are, often can’t do well.
We offer two primary types of in-dash GPS navigation systems:
- Aftermarket In-Dash Head Unit – If your vehicle does not have an existing navigation system and you’re a candidate for adding additional technology features that are absent, a new aftermarket in-dash navigation head unit may be an excellent choice. It’ll play all your music; some even play DVD-Video discs. Many of our systems also feature Bluetooth hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming. Think of our in-dash GPS navigation head units as the hub for all the greatest technologies, all at your fingertips in the dash. Our systems work with existing steering wheel controls (if your vehicle is equipped) and we can interface flawlessly with any other on-board systems, such as OnStar. The systems include a dedicated GPS antenna and connection to the vehicle’s speed sensor circuitry to maintain accuracy of reported position and vehicle speed.
- Factory LCD Screen without Navigation Option – If your vehicle make and model had a GPS navigation system option, but your particular car did not come with navigation, we can often add it to function exactly as the factory navigation option. One benefit of our upgrade is that maps are far more current than the factory maps and, depending on the vehicle, we may also have additional inputs to utilize for displaying images on the factory LCD screen, such as a reverse camera or video playback. We install a dedicated GPS antenna, often hidden in the factory location to further emulate the original equipment. In addition, many of our factory-like navigation upgrades connect to the vehicle’s on-board networks to acquire vehicle speed information. It’s a true upgraded navigation system and, chances are, it’s more advanced than what was even offered with your vehicle from the factory.
