Having purchased a new amplifier, you might be contemplating an amp wiring kit. You are probably wondering about the types of amplifier wiring that are available. The truth is, there’s quite a few differences between the kinds of wiring, and it’s also worth knowing that not all ‘wire “Gauges” conform to the domestic wiring standards. Lets take a look at 2 of the biggest areas where you can go wrong when buying amplifier wiring:
CCA or OFC Amplifier Wiring?
There’s a big difference between copper-clad aluminum (CCA) and oxygen-free copper (OFC) wiring. First of all, aluminum conducts 61% of the electricity that copper conducts, meaning that you’ll need a thicker aluminum wire and it will produce more heat. This equates to less efficiency and can possibly be unsafe. Copper wiring on the other hand produces less heat and reduces the overall strain on your car’s system.
Another benefit of OFC wiring includes less oxidation. Oxidation reduces current-carrying efficiency of the wire. The only benefit of CCA wire is the lower price. Unfortunately, because of all of the limitations of CCA wire, the savings can seriously compromise the quality of your system.

4G vs 8G Wiring
While other gauge wiring is available, 4G and 8G are by far the most popular and common for car audio installations. 4G wiring is thicker and can carry more current, but 8G wiring is cheaper. If you plan on upgrading the amp in the future, buy 4G wiring so you don’t have to replace it later. It is also important to keep in mind that the longer the wiring, the thicker the wire has to be.
Thicker gauge wiring not only allows for upgrades later on, but it is safer. It’s a very bad idea to under power an amplifier, and it’s a worse idea still to run too much current through a wire that can’t handle it. Proper sizing is the key! A note of caution: The manufacturers of unbranded wiring (‘cheap Chinese wires’) sometimes interpret the 4G and 8G standards rather liberally. This means that in many cases a cheap “4G” wire will have less conductive ability then a quality 8G wire. Buyer beware!
A Word On Fusing
Don’t forget that correct fuses are needed as well. They often come together with an amp wiring kit but can also be bought separately. Under no circumstances should your ever eliminate the fusing on your power wire. It belongs close to the battery and it’s sole purpose is to prevent your car from burning up in the event of a short or an accident. When in doubt, always ask an expert.
